Umbrellas and Wind
Anyone who has been out in a windy rainstorm has probably either had their umbrella blown inside out or been afraid it was going to happen. I have a tendency to lay my umbrella down and forget it somewhere if I needed it for the rain when I went inside but then it quit raining before I left.
One summer week-end a few years ago here in Houston, I was driving along a main thoroughfare street when I saw what was obviously a homeless man (the worn backpack and ragged duffel bag told me his story) out in the pouring down rain. I pulled over and after getting his attention, I rolled my window down and gave him my umbrella. He was grateful but he looked so shocked that anyone had even noticed him. It was not much of a windy day but it was a chilly rain and miserable - I was in a nice dry car headed home where I could dry off quickly after getting inside. I knew he did not have that luxury waiting for him at the end of his journey down that street. I didn’t have any cash with me or I would have given him some of that too so he could get some coffee to warm up.
I’ve never had a patio umbrella … one of these days I will … they are lovely and would be really nice to keep from being in the hot sun down here in the summer time when I go outside with Miss Sugar Plum - I have to buy a house first before the patio umbrella since I moved into an apartment September of 2007 and my lease isn’t up til August 2008. I have seen one blown inside out though at a neighbors house when they left it open during a windy thunder boomer.
