Katy TX Kite Flying at George Bush Park

Dateline: Sunday, February 3, 2008

Yesterday, I bought a kite at Rick’s Darts & Games in Houston on Westheimer. I stopped in on my way home from taking Miss Sugar Plum to the Vet [200 bucks - pet health - priceless] - I wanted a Dragon Kite with a picture of a dragon on it but they didn’t have one so I bought an X-Delta wavy gradient [made by www.premierkites.com - they do not sell direct to the public].

I took Miss Sugar Plum home instead of driving right out to the park to fly the kite immediately - she had gotten her current round of shots and I was not wanting to have her too active - she was not sick but she was exhausted - she has severe panic attacks going to the Vet or to a pet store. I think she believes she is losing her home when we go and it freaks her out and she was in full panic mode yesterday. I know she is only going to get examined and current health protection but she doesn’t know that. The Vet gave me some ideas of what to do that may help her overcome it so I will be trying those.

I had lunch and then put my kite together, then off I went alone without Sugar Plum to George Bush Park. I was the only kite flyer there yesterday afternoon [I was over by the picnic shelters that are close to the children's playground] … it was about 2 or so by the time I got there. I stayed for about an hour flying my new kite - I bought 500 ft of string and I let it all out. The rewinding took awhile and my arms and hands got really tired really quickly. It was still flying in the wind there about maybe 6 to 7 feet off the ground which was very interesting. It was quite easy to get up into the air - I only got 30 lb string and I”m not sure if that is heavy enough or not - Premier’s website recommends 90# - we’ll see next time I fly if it is a faster wind speed. Today, the rain has not materialized yet by 11 AM but the wind is pretty calm - not enough to fly a kite. Wouldn’t you know it … I buy a kite yesterday and the wind is calm today LOL … it won’t last. I even managed to get it up in the courtyard of the apt complex when bringing it home across the parking lot from the car but the wind was not strong enough to really fly it here when I got back.

I’m wondering if I could use a fishing reel and fishing line instead of string and a kite string holder to fly kites so that perhaps it would be easier to reel it in … I will have to ask my son-in-law :) … he knows about fishing reels and fishing line.
