Spring Kite Flying Preparations

February 19, 2009 on 10:04 am | In Wind Passion | No Comments

Here it is February already and we have had some glorious kite flying weather already here in the Katy Texas area … this morning was clear and crisp outside and full of loud bird noises overhead making me appreciate the lovely sky full of migrating … geese? …. ducks? … anyway I am not sure if it was honking or quacking or a bit of both … I could hear their wings too … the tell-tale whispering wheesh-whoosh of powerful wing strokes in the invisible wind …. it made me feel as if I could see the wind itself …. as if it were wind waves and currents I could paint on canvas … the ebb and flow of the wind is fast becoming something I want to try to get on paper with my watercolor pencils.

But … kite flying prep … that is the subject for the moment …. lists … I love lists so I can check off what is done and see at a glance what is yet to be done!

Right now is a good time to get your new kites ordered if you have not done so … time to check the kite string …. did you leave it all in a tangle when you threw it in the closet last year? Do you need new string and or string holders? Are your kites ready to pull out of the closet and pack them into the car for the trip to the park or kite flying field? Do you need a new chair to take with you in case you get tired of standing and walking? Do you have a cooler with bottles of water to keep you hydrated? Do you have lotion to keep your wind chafing and wind burn to a minimum? Do you have gloves if needed for better grip on those kite string holders?

Did you buy new batteries for your digital cameras and camcorders or find the electric charger to charge the existing ones to be sure to record all the excitement of family and friends and even strangers flying kites if you are a watcher of fine glorious kite flying and using a tripod will probably give you better pictures of your memories than hand holding the camera.

Even when I cannot go out and about to fly a kite outdoors … I have a gorgeous, quite large Viking Ship kite adorning the top of my refrigerator …. my family thought I was a bit daft the first time they noticed it up there … they did not say so … but they did look at me a bit … oddly (not many people in their experience put a large box kite in their kitchen) … but it serves a twofold purpose for me … it means I cannot clutter up the top of my fridge any more because it is full of a marvelous colorful kite … and it is a unique way of bringing a big grin to my face every morning seeing it right there ready to fly away in the wind currents if they ever invade the kitchen like Vikings on a coastal raid!

Enjoy! Be Safe!

STAY AWAY FROM POWER LINES!
